Manchester City have agreed a €90 million deal for Josko Gvardiol with RB Leipzig, reported The Atheltic on Wednesday.
The final details of the contract are being finalised by the two clubs and if everything goes well, the deal will be signed by the end of this week.
The length of the contract has not been revealed yet but the defender has been given a green light to undergo a medical test on Friday (August 4).
Gvardiol — who came through the ranks of his country club Dinamo Zagreb — has been at RP Leipzig for two seasons and has a contract till 2027, which put his club in a strong position in negotiations with the English club as they have been demanding €100m for the centre-back.
Gvardiol, 21, emerged as a top target for City’s head coach Pep Guardiola earlier this season. The English champions faced Leipzig in the Champions League last season during round of 16 where they beat the German club 8-1 on aggregate.
The Croatian will become City’s second summer signing after Mateo Kovacic — who joined the treble winners from Chelsea — and will become one of the most expensive defenders in history with a €90m deal.
While Gvardiol's arrival means the end of Ayremic Laporte, it could also spell some trouble for Nathan Ake’s future who was pivotal in City’s treble last season.
The 21-year-old emerged as one of the best defenders in the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar.
Earlier, after Riyad Mahrez’s departure to Saudia Arab was confirmed, Guardiola hinted at a potential striker signing.
With the Algerian footballer's departure, Man City now have one spot to fill and Guardiola has not ruled out a signing.
“The market is open until the end of August... I think a few things or many things are going to happen,” Guardiola on signing a winger.
“We will see if we need wingers or inside players, we will see what happens with loan players, which players stay here or not.”
